Primarily a cellist, Samuel also plays to grade 8 standard on piano, clarinet and trombone, and is a proficient acoustic, electric and bass guitarist. He is equally at home performing as a soloist, or member of a chamber ensemble.

As a soloist, Samuel has performed major repertoire including cello concertos by Dvorak, Elgar, Garth, Saint-Saëns, Shostakovich, Vivaldi and Walton.

Samuel is often playing at weddings and functions as a member of a string ensemble, and can be found playing cello, bass, reeds or keyboards as a member of the pit band for local theatres, schools and amateur dramatic companies.

Samuel is an experienced instrumental tutor, his areas of expertise cover strings, wind, piano and guitars, with students achieving excellent results in instrumental exams, receiving entrance scholarships to prestigious schools and gaining places in National Youth Ensembles. 

Samuel encourages good posture and technique, incorporates theory and takes students interests into consideration for maximum student satisfaction. 

Comfortable teaching all ages and abilities, Samuel regularly teaches in individual, small group, whole class and large ensemble settings.

As a confident sight reader and a calming presence, Samuel is often asked by colleagues to provide piano accompaniments for their students for examinations, recitals, competitions and recordings. 

Being a wind tutor, Samuel is sensitive to breathing requirements for vocalists, wind and brass players and as a string tutor he is able to offer assistance with tuning and sort any issues with slipping pegs.

Samuel is fully up to date with the exam board requirements and can offer an aural test run-through in addition to accompanying services.


Samuel is familiar with leading ensembles of all sizes, ages and abilities. He coaches sectional rehearsals for both regular and ad hoc workshops and can deputise for rehearsals and performances.


He directs junior orchestras with players in their early stages of musical development, creating strong foundations and building confidence. During the intermediate level, Samuel challenges these ensembles with more complex techniques, rhythms and leadership skills. In the advanced ensembles, Samuel encourages detailed nuance of large scale and lesser known works to broaden even the most competent players' ability. 


Combining an aptitude for theory with his in-depth knowledge of instrument limitations at different levels, Samuel is able to create arrangements and transcriptions for any instrumentation, from players of beginner to professional standard.


He frequently provides arrangements for massed ensembles with players of mixed ability, as well as music arranged for professional string quartets. You can hear some of Samuel's cello ensemble arrangements here.


Samuel has a fully equipped studio with professional industry standard microphone AKG C414 to capture live instruments and vocals, and a Roland FP-60 digital piano which he runs through a UR44 audio interface to Cubase Pro DAW to capture, mix and master top quality sound recordings.

Samuel has recorded strings for individual album tracks, film scores, and has collaborated with photographers to provide background music for wedding videos and highlight reels. He regularly creates his own backing tracks to perform with, and for use by students for practice, examination and audition purposes.
